WHAT IS CMMC?

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a framework established by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to safeguard sensitive information across the Defense Industrial Base (DIB). It integrates various cybersecurity standards and best practices to enhance the security posture of contractors handling Federal Contract Information (FCI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). The CMMC framework includes three levels of assessment:

Level 1: Basic Safeguarding of FCI

  • Requirements: Annual self-assessment and annual affirmation of compliance with the 15 security requirements in FAR clause 52.204-21.

Level 2: Broad Protection of CUI

Requirements:

  • Either a self-assessment or a C3PAO assessment every three years, as specified in the solicitation.
  • Decided by the type of information processed, transmitted, or stored on the contractor or subcontractor information systems.
  • Annual affirmation verifying compliance with the 110 security requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2.

Level 3: Higher-Level Protection of CUI Against Advanced Persistent Threats

Requirements:

  • Achieve CMMC Status of Final Level 2.
  • Undergo an assessment every three years by the Defense Contract Management Agency’s Defense Industrial Base Cybersecurity Assessment Center (DIBCAC).
  • Provide an annual affirmation verifying compliance with the 24 identified requirements from NIST SP 800-172.

Each level is designed to ensure appropriate security measures based on the sensitivity of the information handled. For CCPs, the primary focus is on understanding and implementing Level 1 requirements as a foundation for cybersecurity compliance.

WHY IS CMMC IMPORTANT?

CMMC is crucial for ensuring the security of the supply chain that supports the DoD. As cyber threats continue to escalate, protecting sensitive information from compromise is critical to national security. CMMC compliance is now a mandatory requirement for organizations seeking to do business with the DoD, making certified professionals invaluable in helping companies navigate these requirements.

WHAT IS A CERTIFIED CMMC ASSESSOR?

A Certified CMMC Assessor (CCA) is an advanced certification under the CMMC framework for professionals who:

  • Conduct formal CMMC assessments at Levels 1 and 2.
  • Evaluate an organization’s compliance with CMMC requirements.
  • Provide objective and unbiased assessment results to determine certification eligibility.

CCAs are integral to the certification process, ensuring that organizations meet the DoD’s rigorous cybersecurity standards.
